On the heels of the label’s Surreal Estate compilation, California’s Frite Nite imprint drops its 14th release and first in a series of DJ-friendly digital singles showcasing the crew’s eclectic taste in dance music.

FTNT014 is a 2-track collab between LA-based label boss Salva and San Francisco mainstay Grenier (aka DJG) taking cues from a wide array of influences past and present. Recorded in early 2012 in sessions split between both of the artist’s Cali studios — these two tracks are brand new, hot off the press and we’re excited to get them into your DJ crates.

On the A-side “Wake The Dead”, you can clearly hear the mesh of Grenier’s Junglist roots against Salva’s affinity for Chicago warehouse jack, bobbing back and forth between half-time and double-time rhythms, 808’s, chopped breakbeats and a hot dubbed out gospel vocal. Sounds like a delicious hot fudge sundae doesn’t it? The B-side “Forest Floor” is a touch deeper and more musical, carrying a quasi-tribal element and heavy bass built for the discerning club DJ and ethereal mixtape artist alike. Salva and Grenier prove to be an exciting and natural pairing for their first of hopefully many collaborations, we hope you enjoy these as much as we do.

About the artists…

Grenier’s dark, sexy and intelligent club tracks (as DJG) have dominated various label compilations as of late such as Brownswood Electric, Frite Nite’s Surreal Estate, Pinch’s FABRICLIVE mix and Photek’s DJ-Kicks mix. With forthcoming releases on Tectonic, Photek Productions and GetDarker and his debut solo album later this year, Grenier proves to be one to watch coming from the American left coast.

Frite Nite label head and Friends of Friends recording artist Salva has proven not only to be a dominating remixing artist — retouching the likes of Shlohmo, Para One, The Glitch Mob, Tomas Barford, Om Unit, Beans (Anti-Pop Consortium), Rainbow Arabia and more — he finds time to run his own imprint Frite Nite and still ride off heat from his two acclaimed 2011 FoF original releases. Friends, I have some news! Soon I’m going to start releasing music under a new name, which also happens to be my last name, Grenier.

DJG is not going away, in fact I have a 12” forthcoming on GetDarker as DJG with “Rivet” b/w “Melon. Grenier will just be the new flag to wave over some my forthcoming releases this year. Rest assured the new stuff still be very much my sound (not about to start making gabber or anything!), I just want to move forward with a new name.

This edition of my newsletter is all about new music. I’ve got four (!!) releases coming out over the next few months I want to tell you about and there are links to audio clips for everything.

SXSW Recap.

SXSW was such a cool experience. This year I stayed for the entire week and though I was exhausted by the end I left with such great memories and met so many great people. Really want to thank all the people who included me at their showcases - John Psymbionic, Photek, Nathan Hoy, !K7, Munitio, Broken Teeth crew, Nicole and Sub.Mission crew, Austen Bailey.

I got a really great shout in URB’s Best of SXSW 2012 Picks for my set at the !K7 showcase with Photek and Apparat!

New Music.

PHOTEK PRODUCTIONS
Photek’s DJ-Kicks mix for !K7 featuring my two tracks “Here Come The Dark Lights” and “Say Something” is now available for purchase!

The two featured tracks of mine are also being released as a 12” on Photek Productions later this month.

FRITE NITE
My first collab single with Salva will be out in early May onFrite Nite. The two tracks are “Wake The Dead” and “Forest Floor” and they’ve been the highlight of both our dj sets over the last few months. I’m so excited to be doing my first single with my Frite Nite family.

GETDARKER
My tune “Rivet” is a track that dubstep heads have been after for a little while and I’m happy to announce it will be out in late May on GetDarker along with “Melon” on the flip and “Anerley Grove” as a digital exclusive.

TECTONIC
Finally, in July of this year my debut 12” for Tectonic comes out. Tectonic is one of my favorite labels in the world and the opportunity to work with them is such an honor for me. I worked tirelessly to get both these tracks just right, I hope it shows.

Free Track.

In late 2010 I released the 12-track collection Voids. One of my personal favorite tracks was a song called “With U” (listen). I did a sort of acoustic version of that tune and I’m giving it away as a free download via my Soundcloud. For those of you who are fans of the song you may enjoy it, hope you like.

Hello Again.

Looks like it is that time of year when people reflect back on the year now almost passed. I always find this time of year funny. With a twitter feed full of #dubstepmemories and bloggers writing about how entire genres of music are dying or dead I am looking to the future with optimism and excitement! I can’t wait for 2012, I am making huge plans and I think it’s going to be an absolutely incredible year for music.

2011 was amazing, starting with SXSW then tours in Europe, USA and Canada, Bass Coast Project, relocating to Brooklyn for a couple months, the Frite Nite and Wheel&Deal compilations, so many amazing experiences this year. I did a lot of releases and they were all on compilations. I made a conscious effort to slow down the 12” singles and concentrate on writing an album. Writing an album has been a really interesting process, it’s something I have never done before. I think I thought it would be much easier to do (haha!), but with everything that happened in my life this year it’s turned into a really personal project. It’s finally almost done and I look forward to announcing details.

This year I also collaborated in the studio with some of my friends like Salva, HxdB, Michael Red, Moldy, Mayhem, Distal, XI and Archie Pelago - all of which I am hoping to share with you soon.

In the meantime here are updates on some of the other stuff I’ve been busy with since I last wrote to you all.

East Coast Tour Fall 2011.

My Fall 2011 East Coast Tour was awesome. All of the gigs were great and I wanna say thanks to my agent Devin at Surefire and the promoters we worked with to make it happen. I have to give a special thanks to Jason in Burlington VT who let me crash at his place for a couple extra days after I got turned away from the Canadian border(oops).

It was great to see more of the States and visit cities I’d never been to before. The whole electronic music landscape is shifting right now and people are experiencing some growing pains, the climate for underground stuff can seem a little tough right now but all the shows I played were a lot of fun and had a ton of energy and ultimately I just feel so blessed to be able to play my music for people.

Tectonic Recordings.

I’m super pumped to announce that I’ll be releasing a 12” with Tectonic in the new year. It’s a huge dream come true for me, Tectonic is one of my all time favorite labels.

One of the tracks “Uncertain” is also featured on Pinch’s Fabriclive Mix which will be released in January.

GetDarker.

I’m also very excited to announce that I’ll be releasing my track “Rivet” b/w “Melon” as a 12”/digital with London-basedGetDarker in the first few months of 2012. I feel so good working with Lee Darkside and the whole GetDarker family. They’re doing really great work with their weeklyGetDarkerTV broadcast, regular massive nights in London and their label and they’re just great people. I’ll also be contributing tracks to their massive This Is Dubstepcomilation series as well as a possible EP later in the year. Keep your eyes peeled on GetDarker this year!

Photek Productions.

I have to keep it vague for now but I wanted to tell you I’ll be working on some huge projects with Photek and the Photek Productions label in the new year. To be honest I am just one of the biggest Photek fans on earth and the opportunity to work with him has been incredible for me. There will be a lot more to announce on this very soon.

Frite Nite.

My Frite Nite family had a big year in 2011. They released the excellent Surreal Estate album (featuring my track “Rites”) as well as two massive shows at the Mezzanine in San Francisco.

This year I plan on stepping up my involvement with Frite Nite with some more releases and getting involved with some possible tours. Salva and I recently collaborated on some really cool tracks that I think will see release on the label next year.

I’ve done a very special exclusive mix for URB of all 100% original material. Track listening and mp3 download here. Recorded live in Boston during my East Coast tour, it features mostly all new/unheard material as well as some staples of my dj sets.

European Tour Diary, Part Two

Berlin

- listening to Gas on the train through the sunny German countryside: yes.- the sun and the storm
- greeted by my (birthday-hangover having and soon to be totally sick with a cold) agent Paul Fowler on the train platform at Berlin Hauptbahnhof
- a walk around Friedrichshain, found a rave going on on a bridge at 8 in the evening on a Monday. why not.
- I could so live here. shit.
- amazing amazing weather
- intense intense hayfever
- kebab of the gods
- met the guy who runs Little Big
- Susan! and her parents! and a tour around Berlin on the s-bahn.
- thoroughly enjoying a few days without stepping foot inside a club
- Paul playing me amazing/bizarre African music

Belgium

- I want waffles NOW- the Brussels airport is mental, possibly the biggest airport I’ve ever seen, took me 20 minutes just to get out of the gating area
- no allergies yesss
- met by the promoter and driver, Martijn and Joren - super nice dudes.
- the name of the town i’m djing in tonight is “As”. they pronounce it “Ahs” but keep saying “Ass”.
- cannot tell the difference between the sidewalk and the street

Gothenburg

- Gothenburg looks beautiful, super warm and sunny, shorts weather the whole time.
- the sun preeeeetty much never goes down. crazy
- this hotel is so nice but it has no soap

- gig is in this rad venue down by the water under a bridge, beautiful light from the sun still in the sky at 12am

- next day there is this huge street festival in downtown Gothenburg, Carl takes me around to show me the city

Bristol

- saw Kyle Hall and Joy Orbison in LHR. man why don’t i have personal drivers like those dudes.- back in Bristol, Tony picks me up at the bus station
- my 30th birthday begins in Bristol
- in the morning me and tony drive to a seaside town on the west coast of england called Aston By The Sea
- i spent my 30th birthday basically acting like it was my 10th birthday: we ate cotton candy (which they call “candy floss” over there!?), played video games and went go-kart racing and then ate more candy. it was amazing.
- went on a long drive then headed back to bristol to meet up with Pinch and Peverelist for an amazing curry dinner down the road from Pinch’s place
- end the night playing darts and drinking scotch with some of my favorite producers and people in Bristol, feeling blessed
- a visit to the Multiverse offices and studio, super inspiring
- met Julio Bashmore on the street, is not what i thought he’d look like
- Dubloaded with the Daega Boys and Ramadanman!!! goes well, loads of fun, so good to see all the boys, ran into Joker and RSD and Guido and a few other Bristol pals
- another night to chill then off to Amsterdam with the Wheel&Deal guys

Amsterdam

- beers in Gatwick with N-Type, Crazy D, The Others, Walsh, P Money and Benton- rainy and kinda cold in Amsterdam
- super dope hotel
- a long walk around the red light district with Walsh, giggling the whole time
- Youngsta!
- mad dash to the gig, walk in, immediately start djing
- room is massive, i play early but it fills up quickly
- these kids are literally violently moshing to sort of minimal dustup that youngsta and type are playing!? amazing
- huge night, definitely the biggest crowd of my tour
- so good to see all the London boys, they always make me feel really at home even if I am just some weirdo from San Francisco!
- nearly miss my plane to Kiev the next day!

Kiev

- back in the ~~USSR~~! err wait, no, Ukraine!!!- i arrive late in the day, not a lot of time before the gig
- quick shower and then off dinner with Polina
- wild dogs in the streets, everywhere
- asshole cab drivers
- so good to see Valta again and catch up
- feeling exhausted, this 5 Hour Energy bottle Miro gave me in London about to come in handy
- it does because I dj for 3 hours and it goes OFFFFF
- seriously my favorite gig of the tour, it was just so much fun and everyone i met was so lovely
- played almost an hour of oldschool hip hop - who am I????
- come outside after the show and the sun is up, beers in the park!
- get to the airport after about 45 minutes of sleep and still really drunk, this should be a fun 11 hour flight home!!!

Kiev

- 10 hour flight on this extremely old plane, still has ash trays!! smells like bananas and burnt stuff
- call my mom to say hi/bye like i always do
- sat next to this real chauvinist cab driver who married a girl from Moldova and wouldn’t shut up about it
- meet Valta and Polina, lovely people
- beautiful and warm weather in Kiev
- chestnut trees blooming
- hella naps
- georgian food for dinner with Kseniya, a nice evening
- pass out so hard

London

- Even more beautiful amazing weather in London (!!!)
- Tiny the reggae singer picks me up, amazing guy from South London, he went to school with Jumping Jack Frost and Clayton Hardware. Doesn’t really know much about dubstep but heard Anti War Dub on the radio and loves it. His accent reminds me so much of Pokes and Mala. Really cool guy.

- meet up with Sander Eprom yay! off to soundcheck
- Tony Addison Groove is there and is buzzing off having had no food or sleep yikes
- meet Mark Ernestus from Rhythm & Sound - i’m too nervous and awe-struck to say anything to him other than hello and it’s really nice to meet you. he’s exactly how i thought he would be.
- indian for dinner, really good meal. run into Rob Pinch and Lizzy
- my set goes fairly well, i wasn’t that thrilled with it but others seemed to like it
- played at the same time as mark ernestus so i didn’t get to catch his set
- saw some of Shackleton and he was amazing
- Pinch playing house, surreal, really good
- Tony killed it, was the first time i got to see his live set
- Eprom killed it with a laptop and an iPad and nothing else - cyber!
- Skrillex was at the club - wutttt
- late night drinking and spliff sessions with Pinch, Tony, Eprom, Miro
- we found a painting of Bassnectar in our hotel - wutttt
- Andrew and his wife Charlotte’s house for the night, lovely people, lovely hospitality
- drinks with Tom McCarthy and Alex for some laughs, industry chit chat and gossip

Manchester

- sat next to what sounds like some rather famous manc boxer on the train, try not to let them notice i was listening to him tell his friend all kinds of funny stories about famous people he’d met
- manchester is a beautiful city, feels so different from south england
- the promoter Rich Reason, lovely chap
- my hotel room was like an apartment with a kitchen
- still haven’t adjusted to the time difference, exhausted, more damn naps
- gig was cool, very lively crowd for a monday night, uni kids just finished their finals, raved harder than any monday night ravers i’d ever seen

Bristol

- back in bristol, feels so good
- last time i was here it was november and horrible weather, feels like a very different town in the warm sunlight
- major chill-out/do-nothing time with my pal tony
- went and saw some really cool parts of the city i’d never seen before
- out to Batman the cat and Rozz
- i love bristol, can’t wait to come back here in a few weeks for my birthday and Dubloaded

Poznan

- i’ve determined you don’t know anything about air travel until you’ve flown on Ryanair - that said, it wasn’t nearly as bad as i’d always heard… though there was some crazy pressure change and some dude fell over and passed out. that was weird.
- first time to Poland. very unique feel to the city of Poznan
- picked up by the greatest guy in the world Filip aka Feelaz
- felt really good in Poznan, feeling happy
- exploring the city, Old Town
- recording the sound of the intersection lights changing
- pirogies are delicious
- lots of good conversations with Filip, speaks very fluent english with a London accent
- prazinky chips as recommended by star eyes, delish
- felt really inspired in Poznan for some reason, made lots of lists for new ideas, lots of deep and good thinking
- went out for beers at the club on Thursday night, sat outside all night long, got drunk with the lads, ate a kebab
- Friday had a nice bbq with Aleks, Ali, Maggie and the crew
- had the worst allergies the night of the gig, thankfully Ali saved the day with some magical mystery Polish pills (which turned out to be Zyrtec). Pretty much felt like a nerd though.
- gig went well, had a nice time. hard to see the crowd cos it was so smokey. cool venue
- got drunk on cherry flavored vodka. oops!

Gdansk

- by saturday i was starting to talk to myself in my head in broken english and a polish accent
- me and aleks head to Gdansk on the train, 5 hours, but at least we got a train car to ourselves and got some sleep
- Polish countryside is beautiful and green
- met by Jakob aka Rezza in Gdansk, super cool guy!
- gdansk has so much visual history it’s crazy, it’s where WWII started and basically where communism started to end
- more pirogies! and then watched barcelona take the piss out of manchester united (sorry Rich!)
- my hotel is a former soviet style hospital, super haunted feeling, watched some polish pop music videos
- get to the venue out in this former ship yard, really cool place, old buildings with bullet holes from the war still
- played my favorite set of the tour so far, felt really good about it, despite not being able to hear much out of the monitors - it’s funny how sometimes nothing gets in the way and sometimes everything gets in the way
- meet Hatti Vatti! what a cool guy. great producer, great dude
- club started to wind down around 5am so we put on some mixes from my laptop, first a dj Pete wax treatment mix, then Comma’s last mixtape
- club owner started feeding us shot after shot of vodka; got completely shit-faced
- hatti vatti found the wifi password for the club and we decided to get on a youtube soundclash!!
- me, hatti vatti, the club owner and just random people youtube soundclashed in the club until 8am
- hatti vatti playing air guitar on top of the speaker stack over sweet child o mine - epic
- completely cross-eyed walk back to the hotel in the morning with the sun out and people going to work
- blackout
- some hours later waking up, headed for breakfast and a very slow walk around town
- me and alex back on the train, only this time it’s fucking packed, no space for naps
- dinner with filip in the evening back in poznan, chilled out evening in his flat near city center
- a beautiful sunny monday. off to Berlin today. Bye Poland! I hope to come back.
